Don’t call it a comeback but cassette tapes are back. According to this Guardian report sales were up a whopping 125% in 2018.
Pause. Stop. Rewind! The cassette, long consigned to the bargain bin of musical history, is staging a humble comeback. Sales have soared in the last year – up 125% in 2018 on the year before – amounting to more than 50,000 cassette albums bought in the UK, the highest volume in 15 years.

Since the untimely death of Mac Miller in September 2018, many fans have wondered about how much music he left behind. Now, it’s looking like he might have a lot of left over material, and a sizable chunk of those tracks could be on an unreleased LP he reportedly recorded with producer Madlib.

Personally, I feel that the state of hip-hop has been uninspiring over the last few years. Maybe I was spoiled by the era I grew up in; Public Enemy, Gang Starr, MC Breed, One Be Lo, Esham, Scarface, Ras Kass, Dead Prez, Wu-Tang, O.C., Cormega, Nas, and Pac are the storytellers I admired. Don’t get me wrong, there is a lot of good music being released, but there is also a lot of garbage being released. Now that any high schooler with a tattooed face can cheaply purchase a microphone, computer, and music software the game has changed. Add a Soundcloud page and voila, a generation of wannabe rappers and producers are born.

Ayem Honcho, one of the most underrated rappers from West Philly, has just released the visuals to his hit single “The Wake Up.”
The title track to his upcoming project, also titled The Wake Up, doesn’t disappoint. Ayem’s positive vibe shines throughout the soulfully produced Glen Mills track. The video was shot at Cobbs Creek in West Philly, and is a reflection of Ayem’s persona; full of life and surrounded by balance.
