GM Idling Five Car Assembly Plants, 10,000 Workers Affected

General Motors will close five assembly plants for one to three weeks in January to shrink swelling inventories of passenger cars.

The decision reflects the ongoing U.S. market shift away from passenger cars to trucks and SUVs, GM spokeswoman Dayna Hart said Monday. Just over 10,000 workers will be idled.

Workers at the plants will get supplemental pay and unemployment benefits that add up to most of their pay.

The company’s Detroit-Hamtramck and Fairfax (Kan.) assembly plants each will be shut down for three weeks, while a plant in Lansing that builds the Cadillac CTS and ATS will be down for two weeks. Factories in Lordstown, Ohio (Chevrolet Cruze), and Bowling Green, Ky. (Chevrolet Corvette), each will be idled for one week.

Models affected at Detroit-Hamtramck include the Chevrolet Impala, Camaro and Volt, and the Cadillac CT6. Fairfax is where GM builds the Chevrolet Malibu, which is selling well, but dealers held 84 days’ supply of Malibus on their lots at the end of November, up from 59 days a year earlier, according to Ward’s Automotive. Normally, automakers like to have a 60-day supply on lots.

Dajuan Wren, better known as ‘Street Lord Juan‘, was a Detroit icon. Sometimes he went by Stephon Greer, Dajuan Johnson, or lastly, Nerau Neri Aasekhemu Ali (I’ll get to that later), and these were just a handful of the aliases.
